A video editor is responsible for assembling raw material into a finished product suitable for broadcast whatever the format, e.g. on the internet, TV, in cinema or on a DVD.
They work with the rushes, recorded dialogue, sound effects and graphics.
Editing is a main part of the post-production process and the editors are largely responsible for the quality of the final product. The editor will therefore usually work very closely with the Director to achieve a good end result.
An editor's creative freedom varies with each production they work on. On some productions they may be required just to edit the video exactly to another's specifications whereas sometimes the editor can be given much more freedom and in doing so the editor can be responsible for creating the structure, the tone and the narrative of a production.
I also found that there can be two types of editors in a production, offline and online editors. The offline editor assembles all the rushes and other elements, selecting the shots, arranging the shots and putting in music. The online editor is responsible for colour grading, correcting faulty footage and adding special effects.
